Prototype notes

The first of the standard gauge vans were built in 1884 and 296 were built. They were built with 2 luggage compartments separated by a guards compartment complete with either side look-out  duckets and a hand brake. At first they were built with one pair of double doors per compartment on both sides. Later developments,  (which this kit is based on), had two sets of doors per compartment each side to speed up loading. They were originally intended as passenger luggage vans but saw all sorts of traffic (apart from perishables) right across the entire GWR system. After an active service life many were downgraded for departmental use.

59 were built with corridor connections and this kit is supplied with them. However thse may be left off if not required. Most were condemned in the 1930's and '40's but a couple survived until 1954.
