Hornby TT:120

Hornby TT:120 burst onto the model railway scene two years ago, and we are delighted to say that the scale has been incredibly popular with the modelling community. The new scale is the perfect mix of size and detail, enabling people with limited space to build accurate and interesting layouts in the comfort of their home.

It's amazing to think how much has happened in the past two years. Let’s take a look back down the tracks to see just how far this new scale has come.

The start of our story

Despite being a part of the collector market for just two years, the story of TT:120 actually starts in 2017, when design work on the new scale began. After talking to hobbyists, we found some customers wanted to build a layout but didn't have the space. They found N scale too small, with too many compromises on smaller details.

When TT:120 was finally announced, on the 10th October 2022, it was the first time a new model railway scale had been introduced for 50 years! TT had been tried before, of course, but technology and engineering techniques at the time didn’t allow for the best mechanisms or detail. We’ve now overcome all the issues presented in the past, to create some beautifully engineered and designed models.

The first models

The Scotsman and The Easterner train sets were the first to market and they sold out faster than we could make them! Once we got over this unprecedented demand, we were able to make enough to satisfy everyone who wanted a TT train set.

At the same time, we released nine locomotive models. These replica designs were inspired by some of Nigel Gresley’s most famous machines and a few Class 08s for more modern modellers. Of course, we ensured we had plenty of track packs and accessories for those ready to expand their layout, and all the rolling stock needed for a functional model railway.

A natural progression

The first products were followed up with some of the most popular models in ‘0’ gauge, meticulously designed in our smaller scale. High-speed trains are always popular, so the iconic Inter-City 125 train packs were announced in a range of liveries. And we couldn’t have a TT scale without sound, so DCC-fitted versions also came along in 2023.

Since then, we’ve also introduced the Princess Coronation Class, Class 50 diesels and five Class 66 models. And, of course, an endless supply of wagons and coaches.

What’s coming up?

If you are a regular reader of our Train Terminal blogs or TT:120 Club magazine, you will know that there are so many new models in the pipeline! In the next few months, you can expect some new Class 66 locomotives, TOUAX Sffgmss IFA Wagons, KFA Wagons, J50s and Class 37 models. And there are a few other secrets yet to be announced!

But these models have been in development for some time now. And while those projects have been gathering pace, we’ve been quietly researching and designing lots of new projects in the background. We have a full schedule of products planned for the next five years, so if you are hoping for a particular model, it could already be in development!
