Prototype notes:-

From the 1870s the GWR began building more permanent signal boxes, typically with a brick or stone base and a timber upper storey fitted with large sliding sash windows. This robust and practical design quickly became a hallmark of the company. Mechanical interlocking frames were installed as standard, improving safety and reliability.

During the late Victorian and Edwardian periods the GWR refined its designs into a series of broadly standard types, varying in size according to the number of levers required. While materials often reflected local availability, the overall appearance remained consistent across the system. In the inter-war years, designs were simplified but retained the familiar GWR character.

After nationalisation in 1948, many GWR boxes continued in use under British Railways’ Western Region, but modernisation from the 1950s onwards led to widespread closures. Today, surviving GWR signal boxes are highly valued for their architectural quality and remain a familiar sight on heritage railways and model layouts alike.
