In the 1980s, CSD and DR decided to procure dual-system locomotives in order to simplify the steadily growing traffic and operations in cross-border traffic on the Berlin–Dresden–Prague route.
The expansion of the Decín–Prague line to a maximum speed of 160 km/h made it necessary to upgrade some locomotives. From 1994 onwards, six Czech Rh 372 locomotives were adapted for faster international travel and have since operated under the class designation 371 – "Turbobastard". The converted machines were moved to the depot in Prague.
