The electric locomotives of the 1216 series (Taurus 3) are multi-system three-phase universal locomotives based on the technology of the Siemens EuroSprinter type family. The exterior and high-speed bogies were carried over from the first two generations of the Taurus, but with some detail changes.
From 2006 to 2008, 50 locomotives were delivered to ÖBB. They are designed to operate on lines with a mains voltage of 15 kV/16.7 Hz, 25 kV/50 Hz and 3 kV/DC. The maximum output is 6,400 kW and the top speed is 230 km/h. They are used in national and international passenger and freight transport.
For the individual countries, the locomotive must also have the respective country packages. This includes the special equipment for train radio, display, voice output, train protection systems, lettering and additional equipment. In addition to the use in Austria and Germany, the locomotives of variant C (1216.2) are equipped with an additional country package for the Czech Republic and Slovakia.
