At the beginning of the 1980s, the progressive electrification of the DR route network necessitated the development of a four-axle electric locomotive. The DRG Class 243 is a universal electric locomotive of the Deutsche Reichsbahn, which originated from the test locomotive 212 001-2. The DR procured more than 600 of them.
