From the mid-1950s, the Deutsche Bundesbahn procured a total of 942 Class V 60/V 60.1 locomotives for light and medium shunting service. The difference between the V 60 (260) and V 60.1 (261) series is the higher frictional load of the Class 261. In the course of remotorization with Caterpillar engines from the mid-1990s, some machines were redesignated as Class 363. After retirement, many of them were sold to private and factory railways in Germany and abroad.
