After the construction of test cars in 1936–38, the DRG put streamlined express train cars into service. The windows and doors were completely flush with the outer wall of the car, the side walls were pulled down beyond the actual end of the car and between the bogies. The "apron cars" thus achieved a significant reduction in air resistance. The Reichspost and MITROPA also ordered cars in the new form.
